The 2020 Olympics have concluded. Despite all the worries about corona, I am happy that they were allowed to go forward after all.
The games are an inspiring display of human potential. Viewers around the world get to see the results of the tireless pursuit of a dream in the faces, bodies, and tearful embraces that are the hallmarks of the games. The times when the cameras capture the moment an athlete realizes they have just achieved their dream never fail to move me. What goes through their heads in those moments? Flashbacks of the hours, days, and years of hard work and grueling practices? All the things they missed out on because they had to train? Painful injuries, agonizing defeats, and frustrating setbacks on their journey? All the people – friends, family, coaches – who supported and guided them here? And surely those athletes had imagined themselves on the podium watching as their flag rises to the sound of their country’s national anthem countless times. How satisfying it must be to replace those vague imaginings with the real thing. I guess it must be some combination of all these things and maybe more.
The Olympics are where the best athletes gather to compete. Even being able to call yourself an Olympian is an honor. Winning at the Olympics is, therefore, a stunning achievement because it means you are the best of the best – at that time, there was nobody better than you in the world. It must be an overwhelming feeling.
I enjoyed Olympics, too. Now I miss Olympics, and I’m feeling so-called Olympic-loss.
Olympics have two special elements, I think.
First, the biggest world sports event all athletes compete as representatives from their own home land under the National flags and anthems.
Second, the icon of world peace showed by all athletes and host country’s citizens as we can say international communication.
Unfortunately as far as Tokyo Olympics concerned, it’s difficult to say the second one completed well because of Corona pandemic. Most of the stadiums there were no audience. All athletes were prohibited to go out of the Olympic village.
That’s especially why I cheered them up on TV harder and at the same time I could received their joy or regret more strongly.
We could definitely share their emotion with them.
In this meaning, it is said that Tokyo Olympics is the first memorial event to improve we all human beings can be connected each other beyond not only borders but also invisible barriers.
Very interesting. Yes, this year we had the invisible barrier of the coronavirus. Good point.
