アメリカの秋冬の料理といえば、「Chili」だね。

Hello, everyone. It’s Nate.

CHILI

Chili is a fall and winter favorite in the US.

When it gets cold outside, it is time to make chili! Chili is a very popular food in America during the fall and winter months. It’s a hearty (具だくさん) meal that not only fills your belly, but it also warms you up. Every family has their own recipe, but the basic ingredients are: ground beef, red kidney beans, white onions, green bell peppers, tomato sauce, and crushed tomatoes. My family also adds Italian sausage and celery. If you like spicy chili, you can add jalapenos (hot peppers) or other spices, too.

Most people like to prepare their chili early in the day and let it cook until dinner time in a slow cooker (crock pot). This brings out all the flavors.

This is a slow cooker. Many people use these to make chili.

Some people are serious about chili. There are many chili-cooking competitions (chili cook-offs) (大会)around the USA. They can be big events. Chili chefs come and make their chili for everyone to try. Judges choose the best chili.

HOW TO EAT CHILI

You usually eat chili in a bowl with a spoon. You can eat it as-is (そのまま)or add toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, diced raw white onions(生の角切りのホワイト玉ねぎ), and green onions. In my family, we also like to add crushed(砕いた) saltine crackers. It gives a nice texture (触感). If you like spicy chili, you can add your favorite hot sauce or some fresh chopped hot peppers (jalapenos).

Here you can see some common toppings for chili: sour cream, shredded cheese, green onion.

People usually make a lot of chili, so there will be leftovers. You can use leftovers to make different dishes. My family often puts leftover chili on top of spaghetti. Other people use macaroni noodles.

This is chili with spaghetti. It’s good when you want to add some variety.

I hope you enjoyed reading about chili! Would like to try some? Leave a comment (コメントしてね)!

Hi Nate, I enjoyed reading your blog. While reading it, I thought I wanted to make chili. I looked up how to make it online and checked if I had the ingredients at home. Most of the ingredients were in my home. I’m looking forward to eating.

Really?!? That’s great! If you make chili, take some pictures and tell me how it tastes! After writing this post, I have been thinking about making chili, too. I think the hardest thing to get are the beans. I never see them at the supermarket. I think I need to go to Kyoto to get them…

    I like hot chili dishes.
In Japan we have some hot spices like red peppers, Japanese yellow mastered Karashi or hot green chili past Wasabi.
We normally use these Japanese spices depending on the dishes. For example, red peppers for Udon noodles or Soba noodles, Karashi for Japanese hot pot Oden and Wasabi for Sushi or Sashimi.
Anyway hot chili dishes not only delicious but also good for our health blood circulation, so there are many hot chili dishes all over the world.

Thanks, Michiko! Yes, I also enjoy karashi mustard and wasabi paste. If you ever go to the US, you should definitely try some chili with hot peppers!
